Tonight I will write until my eyes shut. I will type with my thumb until my thumb falls asleep. My eyes will start to blink more slowly and my worlds will get more blurry and when I eventually awake I will know that I have slept.

The words will flow, as they always do, and I will hate them and think of them as pointless and useless, as I always do. Then tomorrow, or maybe the day after, I will read the same words again and realise that they’re not actually that bad.

But that doesn’t mean they’re that good either.

This is the torture of being a human. We are hard on ourselves for no good reason. We build our own obstacles through self-criticism. We knock ourselves down before we even stand up. We judge ourselves as not being good enough, all the while having a very unclear idea of what “good enough” actually looks like.

What does being human mean, anyway?

My belief is that to be human is to be creative. My belief is also that the root of many of our problems lies in the lack of creativity we allow ourselves to be part of, and therefore the lack of creativity that fills out lives.

We are designed to create, and creativity is designed to connect us. We are all gifted, in our own unique way. No two people can see the world the same way. No two people are blessed with the same gifts.

It is our duty, as humans, to share our creative gifts.

It is our duty to be grateful for what we can offer.

It is our duty to value our gifts.

And It is our mission to share ourselves with the rest of the world – completely and honestly.

We all want to see what you see, hear what you hear and feel what you feel.

Our five senses are multifunctional. They not only provide experience for us as individuals, but they create a platform for us to communicate our experiences with others. They provide countless ways to not only perceive and experience life, but to communicate about our journey with others.

The sharing of experience is a two-way street. No one has a story that is better, more interesting or more important than another’s. We are all equal. We are all equally special and unique.

Imagine how good it would feel to show someone the way you see the world. To know that they have experienced, if only for a moment, a truly private and honest part of your life. This is the purpose of creativity – to connect us, and in doing so to remind us of the unbreakable bond we all share. We are all the same, yet we are all so different. It is through our own expression of creativity that we find a true sense of belonging.

So go and write a poem, or whistle a tune. Build a sandcastle or cook an omelette. What you are creating doesn’t actually matter. What matters is the intention behind your creativity – self expression. Be free in your humanness. Have fun, play and connect with others. Let them see your world for a minute.
